Caring for your canary
Diet
A quality canary seed mix plus daily greens, egg-food in the breeding/moult season, and cuttlebone for calcium. Colour-fed varieties need a proper colouring food.
Housing
A roomy flight cage with horizontal bars for exercise. Canaries are happy kept singly — males sing best alone. Keep out of draughts and give 10–12 h of quiet dark.
Song & moult
Males sing to establish territory and attract a mate; song fades during the late-summer moult and returns after. A calm, well-lit spot brings out the best voice.
