The Gouldian Finch

Head colours & body mutations
Gouldians come in three natural head colours and a growing range of body mutations that change the green, purple and yellow of the wild bird. Scarcity of the mutation is what makes a bird rare.
Black-headed
The classic and most common head colour.
Red-headed
A fiery red mask — always a favourite.
Yellow (Orange) headed
Soft orange face — genuinely uncommon.
White-breasted
A clean white chest in place of purple.
Pastel / Dilute
Softly faded, gentle colouring.
Blue-bodied
Blue replaces green — highly prized.
Silver
Ghostly pastel silver across the body.
Lutino
Golden-yellow with a red mask.
Caring for your Gouldian
Diet
A good finch/small-parakeet seed mix, plus egg-food and sprouted seed — especially in breeding and moult. Cuttlebone and grit for minerals; fresh water daily.
Warmth
Gouldians dislike the cold and damp. Keep them comfortably warm (18–25°C / 65–77°F) and draught-free — this is the single biggest key to keeping them thriving.
Company
Sociable and peaceful — keep as a pair or in a group in a roomy flight. They mix well with other gentle finches and rarely squabble.
Health
